Ecologies of Resilience
Resilience describes the ability of systems to be resistant during or after the influence of shocks, conflicts and crisis. Resilient systems are able to adapt to transformations in order to guarantee long-term stability and security. While the term resilience is used as a synonym for sustainability in the area of social and ecological concerns, contemporary designs of resilient systems predominantly follow stereotypical images (green, natural, collaborative). Questioning the concept of resilience forms the basis for a new perspective on ecology, leading from its original meaning in terms of an existential relationship to the natural and social environment.
Prototopia Garden-House-City investigates the connection between design and socio-technological resilience on the basis of case studies and, in dialogue with specific actors, develops prototypical designs for a spatial practice that fosters a sustainable language for an architectural production of resilience.
Prototyping Nature and Buildings
The starting point is formed by three different locations with different climatic and cultural conditions – the site in Berlin at the airport Tegel ties in with the small-scale logic of allotment gardens to develop new types of living derived from the garden culture.
The second site is in Rio de Janeiro’s metropolitan area in the nature reserve of the tropical rainforest Mata Atlântica and understands the informal structure of the favelas as a sustainable development strategy.
The third site in Swakopmund/Namibia is located in the context of an extreme condition of a dry desert-like environment.
A fundamental component of the three designs is the green space of three different ecological systems, which serves as a natural basis for life and which connects all locations in the studio’s approach.
The garden forms the beginning of a design project that is in an intensive interrelation between architecture and ecology. On this basis, prototypes will be developed that create new typological connections between the ecological and social context.
Organisation & Schedule
The studio is run in hybrid mode (attendance events + online assistance).
In view of the difficulties in the exchange due to corona-related restrictions, the focus is on teamwork and adherence to uniform methods and formats to create a collective basis for discussion.

Ökologien der Resilienz
Resilienz beschreibt die Widerstandsfähigkeit eines Systems unter Einfluss von Störungen, Konflikten und Krisen. Resiliente Systeme sind in der Lage, Transformationen aufzunehmen und auf langfristige Sicht Stabilität und Sicherheit zu erzeugen. Während der Begriff als Synonym für Nachhaltigkeit immer stärker im Bereich sozialer und ökologischer Belange Anwendung findet, folgt die Gestaltung von resilienten Strukturen heutzutage weitgehend stereotypischen Vorstellungen (grün, natürlich, gemeinschaftlich).
Die Hinterfragung des Resilienzbegriffs bildet die Grundlage einer Neubetrachtung von Ökologie, die von der ursprünglichen Bedeutung im Sinne einer existenziellen Beziehung zur natürlichen und sozialen Umgebung führt.
Prototopia Garden–House-City untersucht an Hand von Fallstudien den Zusammenhang zwischen Gestaltung und sozio-technologischer Resilienz und entwickelt im Dialog mit spezifischen Akteuren prototypische Entwürfe für eine räumliche Praxis, die für eine Architekturproduktion der Resilienz eine zukunftsfähige Sprache entwickelt.
Prototypen für Natur und Gebäude
Ausgangspunkt bilden drei unterschiedliche Orte, die verschiedene klimatische und kulturelle Bedingungen aufweisen – das Grundstück in Berlin am Flughafengelände Tegel knüpft an die kleinteilige Logik der Schrebergärten an, um neue Wohntypen aus der Gartenkultur zu entwickeln.
Das zweite Grundstück befindet sich im Einzugsgebiet Rio de Janeiros im Naturschutzgebiet des tropischen Regenwaldes Mata Atlântica und begreift die informelle Struktur der Favelas als nachhaltige Entwicklungsstrategie. Beim dritten Grundstück in Swakopmund/Namibia steht der intensive Zusammenhang zwischen Grünraum und gebautem Raum im Kontext extremer Bedingungen einer trockenen wüstenartigen Umgebung. Fundamentaler Bestandteil der drei Entwürfe ist der Grünraum von drei verschiedenen ökologischen Systemen, der als natürliche Lebensgrundlage dient und der alle Standorte in der Vorgehensweise des Studios verbindet. Der Garten bildet den Anfang eines Entwurfsprojekts, das in intensivem Wechselverhältnis zwischen Architektur und Ökologie steht. Auf dieser Basis werden Prototypen entwickelt, die neue typologische Zusammenhänge zwischen dem ökologischen und sozialen Kontext schaffen.

Das Studio ist im Hybridmodus (Präsenzveranstaltungen + Online-Betreuung geplant).
Angesichts der Schwierigkeiten im Austausch aufgrund der coronabedingten Einschränkungen liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der Teamarbeit und der Einhaltung von einheitlichen Methoden und Formaten zur Schaffung einer kollektiven Diskussionsgrundlage.
